«A Healer who doesn’t know the diagnosis methods is like a man that’s lost in the wilderness - he will never find out what the disease is» is said in the Tibetan medical classic treatise «Chzhud-shek». There are 1200 ways in Tibetan medicine to identify the diseases, they consist the three methods of medical diagnosis: a survey, examination, pulse diagnosis. To identify the true causes of the disease a physician has to analyze complaints of the patient, identify the detailed circumstances of the development of disease. Before starting the treatment a physician of Tibetan Medicine has to ask the patient about his diet and lifestyle, to figure out the psychoemotional state of the patient. «A healer who doesn't know the signs of a disease can not distinguish vapor from smoke, cloud from fog» ( «Chzhud-Shi»). A healthy state, from the Tibetan medicine point of view, is determined by equilibrium state of three constitutions (also known as dosha) which define vital functions of the body: wind (nervous system), bile (digestive) Mucus (lymphatic system). Their imbalance leads to diseases. The survey is here to help determine the state of these constitutions. At this stage the physician is also deciding wether the disease is “hot” or “cold”. The Tibetan medicine has a deep understanding of the common causes of all the diseases, treating them as the imbalance of life in a single system which is the patient’s body. So, a clear understanding of the body as a single unit helps the Tibetan physicians to find out exact disease without vague explanations and unclear causes. The physician of Tibetan medicine is able to accurately determine the cause of the disease by using three methods of medical diagnosis: a survey, examination, pulse diagnosis.
